I recently had a telephone conversation with a doctor that offered amongst other thing co-codamol on prescription. UK prescription charges are currently £7.10 – the same product can be bought in all pharmacies over the counter for under £2 and online for 49p.
Why can’t they pop a post-it on the prescription for simple over the counter products?
Whats more I did need a prescription drug – The drug actually costs 3p/tab online based on a £5 private prescription. 14 tables.. You do the maths on how much the pharmacy makes and it explains why they are in all large TescOS stores.
I’m not suggesting that a pharmacy’s services aren’t worth the quid or so I saved, but it’s be more fair to the population if the spirit of prescription charges changes a bit.
- The whole process needs to be more open
- The process should focus on good value for the consumer and independent pharmacies
- Make the prescription cost be a cap
- 49p analgesics should never be charged at £7.10
- Loose cheap medication should have a dispensary charge, tab charge and be capped.
